This is prompted by an excellent posting on cyberciti.biz the 10 greatest OSS of 2009 I've added some of my own here, they will all run on Windows and Linux except those that say Windows only.

Software I have used, like and recommend, for general use
- 7-zip an archive / compression software (Think winzip on steroids)
- VLC a media player (think windows mediaplayer and quicktime but runs on Lin/Win/Mac)
- GnuCash financial management (think Quicken)
- GIMP graphics editor (think PhotoShop)
- Thunderbird email client (think outlook but safer)
- Firefox web browser
- Paint .net image editor (this is Free but not open source) Windows only
- Virtualbox virtualization software (think vmware, Microsoft virtual pc)
- office software suites compatible with MS Office documents, spreadsheets, etc(think Microsoft Office without the ~$400 price tag )
- OpenOffice was a Sun product, Oracle is in the final stages of killing it
- LibreOffice code & developers from OpenOffice
- Foxit pdf reader (think Adobe acrobat without the bloat)
- keepass password safe & manager
- infrarecorder cd/dvd burner Windows only
- Notepad++ windows text editor on steroids Windows only
Software I have used, like and recommend, for tech use:
- Truecrypt encryption
- Bitvise ssh & sftp client
- Putty ssh client, stand alone, no need to install, can be clunky
- Filezilla ftp client
- Pdfcreator allows you to print to a pdf file (think Adobe without the $xxx price tag)
Others I will try:
- Miro internet TV
- Inkscape a vector graphics editor
- Calibre eBook Converter and Reader
- Audacity sound editing
